It is that time when computers are must in all the realms of Life . whether is a small shops selling stationery or to a large extend to control the orbit of a satellite computers has gone to such an extend where we cannot thing of life without it . Computers have reduced in size from a multistory building to a small hand hand held device. Gordon E. Moore’s Law seems to seems to be working and soon there will be time when computers will be cheaper to use .
As we all know the computers has two parts hard wares and soft wares. Just buy cheap hardware will not do . we need to buy the expensive software part of it . Prices for these application increased form daily use to advanced user needs . Most of us doesn't really understand the difference in prices because of the machines come with basic applications . We believe these are free with hardware but we might have paid for them with purchase of the system and funny part is most of them come with only the basic needs . You may need to pay for the others . so we are paying less for hardware and more for software than the hardware
I believe it is right time to think Open Source. Richard Stall man with Linus Torvald’s Kernel [brain for an Operating system] started this movement called Open Source or “GINU [a recursive acronym, standing for GNU’s Not Unix] “according to the Stall man himself means Open to do anything . Fascinated by this I tried using some of the earlier operating systems but to my surprise none of them was good enough to even compared with the Microsoft products . But time has changed and it is the right time to Open Up because Linux Ditros [ Linux distribution meaning different flavours of Linux Kernel] have been built to explore and to be used . Some famous ones of them is Red Hat, Fedora, SUSE, Ubuntu,Madriva etc . These OS [Operating system] not only comes with most of the basic software needs and provides options to search and download the onces you need for advance needs .
Linux Flavours are the not the only once that are open source . Some other interesting Non- Linux based Os are also emerging as new technologies Open Solaris or formerly called Solaris developed by the Sun is one among the non-Linux based operating system developed . There are a lot OS available .
